Come join us for a fun movie! We will be showing “Treasure Planet”, a Disney animated version of “Treasure Island”. The only difference is that the film is set in outer space with alien worlds and other galactic wonders.

When: Monday, June 10 at 4:30 pm.
Where: In the downstairs activity area

We will bring the popcorn and you can bring the soda!

Wacky Wednesdays

On Wednesdays this Summer, between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, while USD 480’s Summer Food Service Program is giving out free lunches to all children and teens, ages 1-18 here at the library, KSRE and the Library will present “Wacky Wednesday” classes.

These free classes will teach kids and their parents about food, healthy food prep, and healthy eating.

June 5th at 11:30 am – For Week 1 of Wacky Wednesday’s, we will go over hand-washing and the beginning of food safety and the MyPlate.

  • Handwashing- We will review proper hand-washing. Although it sounds simple, kids usually love it because we’ll bring our glow light and show them “germs” on their hands.
  • Food Safety- We will introduce food safety by talking about what should be the 1st step in preparing food: Cleaning/preparing your area.
  • Myplate- Introduce the 5 food groups (We’ll go into detail about the food groups later on in the weeks to follow).
  • We will finish up with our snack

June 12th at 11:30 am – Week 2: Breakfast Is For Everybody

We will review the importance of breakfast, why our body’s need it and the benefits and consequences of skipping breakfast. We will also talk about what could be alternative meals for breakfast.

June 26th at 11:30 am – Week 3: Eating Healthy and Well

We will go over more in depth about MyPlate especially fruits and veggies. Touch on the health benefits fruits and veggies have on our body depending on the color we eat.

July 27th at 11:30 am – Week 4: Kitchen Basics

We will teach about measurements and different utensils to use for dry or liquid ingredients.

Summer Reading Kickoff Party

Help us kickoff Summer Reading on June 3rd at 2 pm. We will have games, hot dogs, a sidewalk chalk art contest, balloon animals, and more!

A Universe of Stories, Summer Reading

Signup for Summer Reading at the kickoff party or online. Kids, Birth to 11 years old, can signup here. Adults can signup for summer reading here . No signup is required for teens. For more information about teen Summer Reading visit the Teen Summer Reading page.

Community service help is needed. Anyone interested in fulfilling some community service hours for school, call 620-626-0180 or come in to the library to sign up.

This year, Summer Reading will be out of this world. Dan Dan’s magic show, “Cosmic Conjuring: A Universe of Magic”, will guide you on a journey full of magic space adventures! Adults, come to our music trivia contest on Friday, July 20th at 6 pm just after the library closes.

You can use one of the library’s laptops to play or bring your own smart phone, tablet or laptop. Play individually or as a team. Questions will cover classic artists like The Beatles and Elvis all the way up to artists of today as well as many kinds of music.

Attending this event counts as a stop on your Adult Summer Reading tour badge. You could also win a fun prize!

Daniel Tiger – Smoky Hills Public Television

On Wednesday, June 13th at 1:30 pm Smoky Hills PBS will have a Daniel Tiger story, video, and craft! Recommended ages: 3 – 7 years old.

Share A Story is part of Smoky Hills Public Television’s mission to encourage children to read. Each year libraries around the viewing area invite SHPTV to share information about PBS Kids programs, read a story, teach the children a craft project and send each one home with a book for them to enjoy with their families.
