CHRISMAN LANE D, APT. 74 BLUEBONNET COURTS LIBERAL, KANSAS [attached copy] From Thurs., Oct., 24 Guymon Herald (newspaper name underlined) -- Quoted from Liberal News (newspaper name underlined) [headline] FIRST AEROPLANE FLIGHT IN LIBERAL, OCT. 13, 1912 [paragraph] The plane spent some time in the air and reached an elevation of six hundred feet and sailed around the fairground for several minutes during the two flights. The first flight, however, came near being a fatal one. The plane ran down the center of the race track before take-off. As it left the ground, tumble weeds on the track clung to the steering gear beneath the plane. When the plane reached an elevation of about 200 feet the operator found he could not steer the plane properly. The plane dipped recklessly and threatened, ast he editor of the Liberal News (newspaper name underlined) told to, "turn turtle." The aviator managed to make a safe landing after banking precariously for his return to the landing field. "Those weeds made that sharp turn, not I," he told the spectators. "You folks saw the sharpest turn made that can be made in an aeroplane and not spill the operator out onto the ground!" The spectators who failed to hear the pilot's words after the spectacular event never knew but what it was all a part of the show.
